Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. Taken from Table 'KS25 Knowledge of Welsh: Census 2001, Key Statistics for local Authorities', in the Key Statistics Release from the 2001 Census. Crown Copyright 2003. Data downloaded from ONS web site on 26/2/2008, but listed as having last been modified on 13/2/2003.

Notes:

  1. The relevant census question was asked only in Wales, so this table contains data just for Wales as a whole and for the 22 local authorities within Wales.
  2. Note in original states that 'Cells in this table have been randomly adjusted to avoid the release of confidential data.'

Checking:

  1. Data checked in Excel to ensure that language categories summed to the total population over 3.
  2. No matching to the AUO gazetteer has been attempted. These files have been altered to run on Postgres, but otherwise are exactly the same as they were on the oracle server.
