Table type:
Raw Data

Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. The data were transcribed from Table 3. "Industries (condensed list) of Males and females aged 14 years and over,(exclusive of persons 'out of work')", for "Urban areas with populations not exceeding 50, 000 and rural districts", pp. 182-309 in Census 1931: England and Wales: Industry Tables (London: HMSO, 1934).
  2. This is a complete transcription of the county totals and figures for all individual districts in the above table.
  3. This data entry work was funded by the Greater London Council and the Centre for Cities.

Notes:

  1. This table complements Table 2, which holds a more detailed classification of county totals and of towns over 50,000 population, so does not contain any county or national totals.
  2. A note to the England and Wales table says that, unlike the Industry Tables both for 1921 and for 1951 and later, 'the areal classification is by each person's area of enumeration and not necessarily, therefore, by area of business.'
  3. While table 2 presents the complete industrial classification, including totals for Orders and sub-Orders, this table lists data for a somewhat ad hoc simplification of the full classification: some figures are simply totals for Orders, some are for sub-Orders, or groupings of sub-Orders, and some are ad hoc mergers of the individual 'Groups'. However, the table includes no sub-totals, so the sum of all the listed categories is the 'Total in Industries'. The way the ad hoc categories are constructed does, however, allow totals for each of the Orders to be constructed if they are not listed.

Checking:

  1. As the data were input, a check-sum was calculated to ensure that the total for all listed industrial categories matched the listed total for all industries. Two figures in the table are not included in this check sum, and consequently could not be checked at this stage: the second row, 'Out of work', and the final row, 'Industry not stated'.However, the latter is included within Order XXII, 'Other Industries or Industry not stated', and in most areas seemed to provide most of those in Order XXII, especially for women.
  2. The data have been further cross-checked against the figures for counties and large towns in table 2 of the Industry Report, by (a) summing the industry figures in this table across all districts in each county, (b) summing data in table 2 by the simpler industrial categories used in this table, for both overall county totals and the totals for all large towns within each county, and (c) comparing the male and female totals for each industry in each county to identify cases where the sum of the district figures did not match the reported county total.
  3. In the following cases, a value was 'corrected' even though it had been transcribed correctly from the printed table, because the transcribed value produced errors in both column check-sums, within the particular district, and the industry check-sums across the districts:
    • Berkshireshire: The figure for '8. Cutlery and Small Tools (not Machine Tools).' for females in Maidenhead MB was printed as blank but corrected to 1.

    • Pembrokeshire: The figure for '9. Other Metal Industries (not Precious Metals, Jewellery, or Plate)' for males in Fishguard UD was printed as 1 but corrected to blank.
  4. Following the above checking and correcting work, inconsistencies remained in three counties which could not be resolved. NB these may be the result of errors in the 'large towns' table; and in most cases the inconsistency is either within engineering or within textiles, so overall figures for broad sectors remain correct:
    • Durham: six of the 'small town' industries contained inconsistencies in either or both of males and females, which cumulatively cancelled out:
      • VI: '8. Cutlery and Small Tools (not Machine Tools)': reported total for males less than computed total by 11, and reported total for females less than computed total by 1.
      • VI: '9. Other Metal Industries (not Precious Metals, Jewellery, or Plate)': reported total for males greater than computed total of districts by 5, and reported total for females greater than computed total by 1.
      • VI: '10. Precious Metals, Jewellery, Plate': reported total for males greater than computed total by 5.
      • VII: '1. Cotton': reported total for males greater than computed total of districts by 1.
      • VII: '4. Flax, Hemp, Jute': reported total for males less than computed total by 3, and reported total for females less than computed total by 26.
      • VII: '5, 6. Mixed Fibres and Miscellaneous Products': reported total for males greater than computed total by 3, and reported total for females greater than computed total by 26.
    • Northamptonshire: The reported total for males in '3. Silk, Natural and Artificial' was greater than the computed total of the districts by 1, and the reported total for males in '4. Flax, Hemp, Jute' was less than the computed total by 1.
    • Surrey: There are inconsistencies for three industries:
    • VI: '4. Engineering (not Marine or Electrical)': The reported total for females is greater than the computed total of districts by 2.
    • VI: '6. Construction and Repair of Vehicles': The reported total for females is less than the computed total of districts by 2.
    • VII: '3. Silk, Natural and Artificial': The reported total for females is less than the computed total of districts by 2.
Either the second or third inconsistency in industry totals is linked to the reported total in all industries for females in Epsom RD being less than the computed total by 2, but it is impossible to say which.
