Sources:

  1. This is a very partial transcription of the 1961 census occupation tables, limited to the initial listing of employment status; the bulk of these tables concern occupations, so if a complete transcription is ever done they should be held elsewhere. The available data for England and Wales, and for Scotland, are almost identical so everything is currently held in a single table. All data were transcribed by Harold Price in January and February 2017.
  2. Data for England and Wales were transcribed from Table 1, "Occupation and Status", for "County, County Boroughs, Urban areas with populations of 50,000 or more, County Remainders, Conurbation Centres, New Towns (10 per cent sample)", in the series of County Leaflets Occupation, Industry, Socio-economic groups. The county totals included here are those including any associated County Boroughs, and the county remainders have not been transcribed.
  3. Data for Scotland were were transcribed from Table 1, "Occupation and Status", for "Cities, Counties, Large Burghs, Small Burghs with populations of 10,000 or more, County remainders, Conurbation Centre, New Towns (10 per cent sample)", in the series of leaflets Occupation, Industry and Workplace, which cover Scotland in a series of regions. All areas are included in the transcription except for county remainder.
